Apprenticeship Program

What Is a Plumbing or Gas-fitting Apprenticeship?

Plumbing and Gas-fitting apprenticeships are a method of training that allows anyone young or old, male, or female to -“learn-while-you-earn”.

This apprenticeship system of training for a trade profession is referred to as on-the-job training, and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is to be accompanied-by academic study that focuses upon the laws, rules and regulations-(codes) that are associated with the specialized skill to assure the public’s safety.

The Commonwealths Board of the Examiners of Plumbers and Gas-fitters-BOE, has established and implemented a formal academic plumbing and gas-fitting curriculum and syllabus known as the Tier Program. The Plumbing Academy, Inc.-TPA has structured the BOE Tier-Program into “live” online eLearning sessions.

How Long Does a Plumbing and/or Gas-fitting Apprenticeship Take?

Embarking upon an apprenticeships is a personal investment by the individual to develop a skilled technical aptitude, and this investment is a commitment that can encompass one to five years of time. It includes hands-on-work-(getting dirty), and fulfilling the associated academic studies during the same period. The apprentice’s dedication is key to their individual success and reaching their goal of professional licensure.

Hands-on-training is done while working for an employer-(Master plumber or Master gas-fitter respectively) who assists the apprentice through the process of skills assessment-(practical work experience) while learning their trade. In exchange, the apprentice is devoted on their part to learn while working for one or more employers over a period of one to five years while participating in academic studies. If the apprentice is invested in the process their skills and competencies will be measurable and therefore financially more beneficial to the employer and apprentice. It is a partnership, and you are part of a team.
